Ms. Thompson has friends and family who live in Eckington. Ms. Thompson has a special place for her community. She believes there is a lot the neighborhood offers to its residents, such as, community cohesiveness, mass transit, healthy food choices, medium to good schooling, and workout facilities. However, there are concerns about gentrification that is expressed by Ms. Thompson and some of her neighbors. Ms. Thompson also brings up the concerns she has about local crime, but the uniqueness of the encounters is that locals at times do not report or want to serve as witnesses to crimes. It’s considered snitching which is not a sound practice in the community. Neighbors protect each other even if at times that means not reporting crimes. This may seem strange to a few outsiders, but it’s a reality of many communities within DC and outside.
